advice to help teens sleep better

15-19 year olds are in sleep debt. They sleep an average of seven thirty-seven minutes against at least nine hours recommended by night.



Adolescents are reluctant to go down. How to make adolescents attach more importance to sleep?

From 13 or 14 years, adolescents need to appropriate bedtime, parents must agree to empower this point, even then check that they have turned off the light, said INPE. "Many studies confirm the link between excessive use of new media, especially electronic, and poor sleep, in such diverse cultural contexts as those of France, Japan, Germany, Finland or Belgium" explains François Beck, head of the investigations department of INPE statistical analyzes. Watching movies, series, on a television screen, computer, smartphone ... chat, send text messages, play online games, listen to music ... the link between use of screens and sleep debt proved. The light sources are also stimulants.

In France, young people who, in their room, watching television or using a computer, tablet or mobile phone connected to the Internet sleep an average thirty to forty-five minutes less than their peers. Conversely, reading is associated with a longer average time to sleep

 Parents are often clueless. What advice to give them?

Basic advice must be recalled: move enough during the day, avoid stimulants (coffee, tea, vitamin C, alcohol, tobacco ...), avoiding large meals, a climate conducive to sleep: less light reading , relaxation, meditation, darkness ...

Similarly, go to bed earlier than usual. Avoid staying up late and get up late on weekends to compensate.

It is therefore recommended not to leave the screen (TV, computer, game console ...) in the children's room.

Above all, adolescents should not take sleeping pills.
